Lambing date calculator

Sheep gestation calculator

Ewes carry lambs for about 147 days, usually 144 to 150. Enter the day the ram went in with the flock and the day he came out, and the calculator shows when the first and last lambs are likely; for a single observed mating it gives the expected lambing date with its early and late edge.

Example: the ram in from November 1 to December 4

Most flocks do not record each mating. If the ram (tup) runs with the ewes for 34 days — about two oestrous cycles — the lambing season stretches across the whole period:

First lambs possible: Thu, Mar 25, 2027 (Nov 1 + 144 days)

Most lambs due: Sun, Mar 28, 2027 – Fri, Apr 30, 2027 (147 days after each day of exposure)

Last lambs expected: Mon, May 3, 2027 (Dec 4 + 150 days)

Lambing season: 40 days

A raddle or marking harness on the ram narrows this: change crayon colour every 17 days and you know which ewes were marked in each cycle, so you can split them into early and late groups and run the calculator for each.

For a single hand-mated ewe served on September 20, 2026 the window is short: Thu, Feb 11, 2027 to Wed, Feb 17, 2027, expected Sun, Feb 14, 2027.

Which sheep gestation length does the calculator use?

Minimum
144 days
Reference
147 days
Maximum
150 days

The minimum and maximum come from Penn State Extension’s lambing preparation guide, which notes that gestation can range from 144 to 150 days. The 147-day reference is the typical length given in Penn State’s guide on nutrition for small ruminants from gestation to weaning. These are the sheep values built into the Livestock Gestation Tracker app.

Does sheep gestation differ by breed?

Yes, by several days. University and extension handbooks report the following; breed-by-breed charts for Suffolk, Dorset or Hampshire found online disagree with each other and are not from university sources, so they are left out.

Sheep 201 adds that ewes carrying multiples lamb a little earlier, and that ram lambs and heavy lambs are carried a little longer.

What are the signs a ewe is about to lamb?

Penn State Extension lists the changes to watch for in the last days: the vulva darkens from light to deep pink and swells, the muscles around the vulva and hips relax, and the udder becomes full of colostrum, tight and hard. Close to lambing a ewe often takes herself away from the flock and stops eating. Sheep 201 describes a first stage of labour of roughly 12 to 24 hours before the lamb is presented.

What do I need ready for lambing?

Late pregnancy is when about 70% of lamb growth happens, so Penn State recommends raising the energy in the ewes’ ration in the last third of pregnancy to prevent pregnancy toxemia, aiming for a body condition around 3 to 3.5. Before the first date in your window, have:

  • Lambing pens (jugs) of at least 4 × 4 feet, dry, well bedded and draft-free (Virginia Tech)
  • Iodine for navels, lubricant, warm water and soap, towels and heat lamps used safely
  • Colostrum, milk replacer, stomach tubes, bottles and nipples
  • Propylene glycol or molasses for ewes at risk of pregnancy toxemia, and antibiotics your veterinarian has prescribed
  • A CDT booster given in the weeks before lambing on your veterinarian’s schedule (Maryland Extension suggests two to four weeks before)

When should I get help with a lambing ewe?

Once she is straining hard and the water bag has passed, a lamb should arrive within 45 to 60 minutes; once the front feet show, within 30 to 45 minutes (Virginia Tech). Sheep 201’s advice: if you have worked for half an hour without progress, call a veterinarian or a more experienced shepherd. The afterbirth should pass within 24 hours.

Questions people ask

How long is a sheep pregnant?

About 147 days, or just under five months. Montana State University gives a flock average of 144 to 151 days; Penn State Extension gives 144 to 150. Individual ewes can fall well outside that, from about 138 to 159 days.

When will my ewes lamb if the ram went in on November 1?

With the ram in from November 1 to December 4, 2026, the first lambs could arrive around March 25, 2027 and the last around May 3, 2027, with most due between March 28 and April 30.

Do some breeds of sheep lamb earlier?

Yes. Montana State reports that highly prolific breeds such as the Finn carry for 144 to 145 days, while slower-maturing fine-wool breeds such as the Rambouillet carry for 150 to 151. Ewes with twins or triplets also lamb slightly earlier than ewes with singles.

How long should lambing take?

Virginia Tech’s guidance is that a lamb should be born within 45 to 60 minutes of hard straining and the water bag, and within 30 to 45 minutes once the front feet show; following lambs usually come within 30 minutes.

Why does the calculator give a window rather than one lambing date?

Because ewes in a flock settle on different days of the ram’s visit and individual pregnancies vary by several days. Plan labour and lambing pens for the whole window and watch the ewes from the earliest date.
